Hard Start Issues - Popped up lately June, 2021
Read MoreThis ain't good... this is a "hot start" after it's warmed up completely. As a result, the input voltage to the coil as the battery and everything else is overloaded is only 6.5 to 7 volts., So I just ordered a new Summit Mini-High Torque starter. As long as I do a "cold start", it spins up and fires off nearly instantly. But there is some "trigger point", that once it's reached, it cranks very slowly and the amps jumps to 370....it should be around 200 to 250 at the most..AS IT TURNED OUT, THE STARTER ITSELF PROBABLY IS/WAS JUST FINE... SCROLL DOWN
With the temperature gauge on the dash pegged out, I'm not even at 200 degrees. The thermocouple probe is taped to the radiator inlet tank with insulation taped over it. The second probe is leaving temperature of radiator, the third probe is inlet to new transmission cooler with pusher fan and the forth probe is leaving the heat exchanger. Just took a 5 mile trip, OAT=89 degrees, got home, left hood closed and A/C on idling for 5 to 10 minutes until the dash gauge pegged out.. guess I'm a happy boy...
This is the culprit of the HARD HOT START issue... I cut this off of the corner of the starter that was getting "nudged" due to being about 1/16" from the upper Suspension mount. When the engine moved around even a very tiny amount, this edge was hitting the mount, and forced the starter/flex plate gears together that caused them to bind up, but only when the engine was hot...I put a new starter in anyway..since I had already bought it. AND I rewired the Ford style trunk mounted solenoid so that while starting, a full 12 volts is fed to the ignition module through a 12 gauge wire. Scroll back up for the entire story...
